Meet Mlle. Walton From the mists of childhood comes a long realized dream: To create wondrous products that enhance one’s natural Beauty, heal the body and uplift the Spirit – and to do so using only Nature’s precious gifts... I’ve come a long way from the child who would gleefully use dandelion pollen for eye shadow (mulberry juice for lipstick, lilac and lily flowers for perfume, etc…); the curiosity spark for what I once termed “faerie make-up” (and passions for alchemy and chemistry) remained, simmering, for decades. It was in April 2006 that the epiphany emerged from its chrysalis and finally took flight: what a positive and whimsical endeavor it would be to recreate these types of natural products that everyone can use – and afford to use. Embarking on this journey has, in my opinion, served to reintroduce me to very basic, very natural, very rewarding principles of Beauty – and Life. It is my desire and dream that my products will help you to Reconnect as well; we at Body Eclectic Skin Care strive to make exceptional, all natural, handcrafted body care products that everyone can enjoy and afford.Every opportunity to create products brings a sense of wonder, accomplishment, enlightenment, peace and joy. I Must Ask... (Frequently Asked Questions)

Is your soap considered "certified organic"? Is your soap "all natural"?While the essential oils and botanicals purchased for the creations are certified organic, and while the fresh botanicals used are grown in mine (and my friends) gardens which operate under old-fashioned standards: nothing artificial is used - a couple of the base oils used are not certified organic (although they are certified food grade). Taking into consideration the FDA stricture that 95% of ingredients used be certified organic in order to rightfully use that moniker, the soap creations are not certified organic (the percentage of certified organic ingredients used is closer to 75% in my case). They are, however, all natural: no artificial ingredients are used. The fragrance oils used are wonderful essential oil blends that were specifically created to "mimic" a particular oil... I use these when the plant species from which the essential oil comes is outrageously expensive (like jasmine), endangered (like sandalwood is now) or toxic (like gardenia and lily-of-the-valley). How did you start making soap?About 10 years ago, an old friend enlisted my help in helping her make soap for her aromatherapy & herbal retail shop; I found the process very soothing and relaxing, and the chemistry behind it fascinated me. I helped her until I relocated to Indianapolis in 2001.In 2006 I was at a point of my life where I needed to de-stress and take time to heal myself in all facets (body, mind and spirit), but I didn't know what to do. When my boyfriend at the time asked what he could do to help, the answer i gave forth surprised us both: "Let's go get stuff to make soap!"Sometimes the most precious gifts Life has to offer have been with you all along: for me, creating the recipes and making soap is a Return to my Inner Creative Child, and an Expression of my Connected Self. What a Wonderful Journey so far!How do you make your soap? What is the difference between cold process and glycerin soap?For the soap base, I use the "cold process" method of soap making, which involves combining a supersaturated sodium hydroxide (lye) / water solution and base oils. When combined, the two go through a chemical process known as saponification: the result is soap. Once the soap base is made and cured, the base is shaved and small batches are put into the oven again and re-melted into a soap "mousse"; it's into this remelted mousse that I add the essential oils, botanicals, culinary herbs and foods chosen for the final recipes. "Glycerin" soap is made from a translucent, almost entirely glycerin based, commercial cleansing agent or a commercial cleansing agent base with additional glycerin (and sometimes a touch of goat's milk) added: in either case, they are generally melted down in a microwave and poured into molds (hence the moniker "melt & pour" soaps). I personally find soaps made in this manner to be both irritating and drying to my skin; others have agreed and shared the same concerns.Is your soap biodegradable?Yes it is - because I use all natural products and the creations are made entirely from scratch, there are no additives or chemicals that would harm the environment added. It is safe to use in lakes, rivers and such: thus it makes an excellent soap to use when camping!Why does each soap bar look slightly different?The final bars of scented soap are produced in relatively small quantity (16-25 bars) batches on an 'as needed' basis. While the botanicals and essential oils used in the recipes don't change, the organic nature of the ingredients used is always a bit different. Just as no two snowflakes are exactly alike, each batch of soap will be unique in its appearance. Also, each bar is hand cut, and I have never quite mastered the art of straight lines - or of following them.How do you make the liquid soap?As with the solid bars, the liquid soap is created from a bulk liquid base using the same techniques referenced in the making of the solid bars. There are, however, a couple of differences: the lye solution is comprised of potassium hydroxide and water (which creates a softer, almost paste like soap base), I use more completely saponifiable oils in the liquid (more olive oil, grapeseed, castor and almond), and the paste is cooked at a very low temperature for an extended period of time (usually about 48 hours). Once the cooking is complete the liquid is combined with distilled water and diluted to a solution of 27%, the color of the soap (if the recipe calls for it) is added after dilution; the essential oils are added once the soap has cooled down a bit.Is your liquid soap considered pH balanced? Does the soap ever go bad?To have a product "pH balanced", artificial ingredients are added to bring the pH down to that of water: 7.0. It was originally believed that pH balanced products were better for your skin, but studies have shown that skin care products with a neutral pH are far more likely to develop bacterial and harmful microbes which can harm your skin in the long run (hence the reason many commercial bars develop fissures: it's bacteria eating the bars!). Soap in its natural state is an alkaline cleansing attractant: the soap particles attract dirt and oils to them and, once the dirt is attached to the particles, the soap is rinsed from your skin (we commonly call this phenomenon "soap scum"). Fresh made soap has a pH level of about 10-11.0; the final products are batch tested at 8.2-8.8. An egg white, by comparison, has a pH of 9.0. Also, because of the natural slight alkaline state, good handmade soaps have gentle antibacterial properties and do not interfere with your skin's helpful bacteria. As for longevity, the alkaline state offers another benefit: I've used bars that have gotten "lost" in my personal collection (yes, yes - I admit I keep far too many bars and bottles for myself!) for about 2 years. They're wonderful: both lather and scent simply explode out of the products!How many different uses does the liquid soap have?So far the liquid soap has been used as a body wash, bath soak, human shampoo, pet shampoo, household cleaner, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, fruit / vegetable wash, to remove scale from house plants, a loosening agent (a friend had a ring stuck on his finger), a dedicated face cleanser / make-up remover and as a dedicated soap for cleaning tattoos and piercings. I welcome input from all of you into how else it can be used!Can you use the solid bars on your hair and face?You can use the solid bars wherever you would normally use soap or shampoo. Lots of customers use the bars as a solid shampoo bar or to wash their pets.Will the soap completely dissolve if accidentally left in water too long?From both personal experience and accounts from our customers, if the soap is accidentally submerged for an extended period of time it doesn't dissolve entirely: it turns extremely soft and slowly dissolves away. I dropped a bar of soap in the kitchen sink once, where it was submerged for a couple of days in the dishwater (oops!). I fished out the sodden lump and left it to dry for about a week; it hardened to its original consistency, and was able to use it as normal. How long does it take to create your products?From start to finish, a batch of solid soap takes about 3-4 weeks. The liquid soap takes about 7-10 days to create; the lotions, deodorants, balms and other products can be created in a single evening.How long does each bar last?With daily use, the average bar of soap lasts 4-6 weeks (although from customer accounts that estimation might be a bit short). Why do you use recyclable water bottles for your liquid soap?We at Body Eclectic Skin Care believe in 'keeping it green' whenever possible: it’s also the reason why our packaging for the solid bars is kept to a minimum and why we use jelly jars for our bath salts. We figure "waste not, want not" is a good way to live, and better we use them for our products than have them immediately end up in a landfill. Besides, this way we can pass the savings on to you, as the bottles are donated by friends, relatives and enthusiastic customers! What are the ingredients in your soap? Do you use animal products in your soap?No animal products are used in the solid and liquid soaps - it is a special blend of vegetable oils I've chosen for their cleaning, lathering and emollient properties. For the most part, it’s a lot of olive, grapeseed, coconut, palm, castor and almond oils all blended together to form the base blends (combined with distilled water and either sodium or potassium hydroxide, depending on whether the base is solid or liquid).Is your soap safe to use on animals and children?All of the products are designed to be as hypoallergenic and additive free as possible. Because there are no additional chemical in the soaps and/or lotions, the products are safe to use on animals and children: however, as with any all natural product I encourage people to take into account personal allergies and sensitivities.Can you make soap for people with food /herbal allergies and particular health considerations?For those who do have allergies (or who actually have the good sense to stay away from allergy triggers), I have done custom scents and batches specifically for those with health challenges. As it stands all of the products are vegan / gluten free. I love making special orders for people and find it an especially welcome challenge to create lush products for people with Individual Needs and Desires!Will your soap cure my skin problems?Cure? No, but ecstatic reports have come in of people finding relief from overly dry skin, psoriasis, and acne. I would like to think that using good all natural products will help gently cleanse your skin and offer the tools necessary for your skin to heal itself. By the way, if you would like to report any benefits you’ve noticed while using the product - or just have cool things to say - let me know in my guestbook!Where do you get the ideas for your scent / herb combinations? Using my herbal library and based on years of experience working with herbs, when an herbal or scent combination pops into my head I can fine tune my inspiration into a formula that needs to be created. Other than that, what inspires the creations in the first place - who knows, really? They just come to me. It's why I like creating signature scents for people so much: it gives me a chance to see inside the minds of other creative people as well, and gives me additional chances to come up with new and exciting scents!
